Burnley Rounders Club secure vital funding from Sport England

It was announced last month that Burnley Rounders Club had successfully secured funding from Sport England to develop a brand new indoor and outdoor Rounders league in Hyndburn and Pendle.

After successfully developing Rounders in Burnley – which sees over 400 women and girls regularly play the sport – the club aim to roll out the programme to women and girls aged 13+ to neighbouring towns.

Repeating the process they undertook back in 2013, the club will provide ‘Just Play Rounders’ sessions for local residents of Hyndburn and Pendle with the vision that these will progress into both an indoor and outdoor league.

The secured funding will enable the club to recruit and train new umpires and activators to support the development of the sport in the new areas.

The creation of an East Lancashire festival will offer inter-town competition and links to further opportunities to play Rounders. It also means league winners will be given the chance to play against the Rounders England elite squads.

To help achieve their goals, Sport England have awarded the club a total of £7,692 and the local councils of Pendle and Hyndburn have welcomed the project.

The club will begin delivery  today which ties in perfectly with the launch of Women’s Sport Week 2017.

Janet Roundell, Sport and Play Development Officer at Burnley Leisure said:

It’s an exciting opportunity for Burnley Rounders club to develop the sport in Hyndburn and Pendle, to be able to use the format that has proved so successful here in Burnley and hopefully turn East Lancashire into one of the main areas for Rounders in the country.

Donna Vinten, Programme Manager at Rounders England said:

In conjunction with Rounders England, Burnley Rounders Club and Burnley Leisure have worked tirelessly and successfully over the last 4 years to develop the game of Rounders in Burnley. Rounders England fully support Burnley Rounders Club with their intention and vision to increase the number of women and girls aged 14+ accessing the sport in neighbouring areas
