On Sunday 25 September, seven rounders teams arrived at Leicester University Playing Fields, Oadby, having qualified for the regional rounders final.
Teams were:
Leicester Rep Team and Rugby Rounders, qualifying from 26 June at Old Grammarians Memorial Ground, Northamptonshire.
4th Base and Oddballs, qualifying from 2 July at Prairie Sports Grounds, Burnley.
Drayton Devils and Your Base or Mine, qualifying from 24 July at Ludlow Cricket Club.
Somervale Squad qualifying from the event that should have been on 31 July at Tor Leisure Centre, Glastonbury.
The regional final was a round robin event which consisted of 1 innings of 20 good balls for each match. Each team played each other, then the top four teams went through to the semi-finals.
In the round robin stage, Somervale Squad were unbeaten with Your Base or Mine giving them their closest match, finishing with just two rounders in it. Leicester Rep Team lost just one match to Somervale Squad. It was looking like these two teams might meet again in the final. Other notable performances were Drayton Devils, 4th base and Oddballs, with Oddballs just losing out on a semi-final place.
In the semi-finals Somervale Squad played against Drayton Devils and 4th Base played against Leicester Rep Team, with both Somervale Squad and Leicester Rep Team prevailing. Could the Leicester Rep Team avenge the Somervale Squad for their defeat in the round robin stages? Both teams scored some great rounders and the fielding on display was quick and sharp with some excellent batting placement. Special mention goes to Jordan Stead who placed her hits brilliantly and scored rounders when it mattered.
Well done to Somervale Squad in winning the final of the regional events for 2022. A special thanks to all umpires on the day. The umpiring was of a really high standard and we couldn’t run the events without you. Also, thank you to the venue, Leicester University Playing Fields. This is one of the best venues we’ve used all year and the quality of the pitches is outstanding.
